Rome
Rome is the
capital of Italy and it's a town rich in history, where all artistic periods are
rapresented all around.
Do not forget the Pope and the Vatican City with its enourmous artistic treasures.
Unfortunately Rome is not easy for wheel chair users because being a very old town built
on the famous seven hills there are stairs and steps; the side-walks are usually narrow
and main streets only have slipways and curbcuts. The traffic is a jam and cars parks
anywhere.
Netherless Jubilee works are improving the accessibility and many areas of the historic
centre are closed to the traffic. An able-bodied companion could be useful.
Rome has 2 underground lines; line B has been renewed and almost all stations are
accessible with lift. Line A is not accessible and has been replaced by an accessible bus
service with lift (#590) which follows the same A line itinerary. There are no special
taxis
Fiumicino airport is accessible and is linked to Rome by an accessible railway.
Accessible public WC at Colosseo, Villa Borghese, Ripetta and few other places.
In some museums and monuments tactile visits are available
